UNDER other circumstances we might be commemorating the armistice in July rather than November.

It was in July 1918 that Germany first asked for same. At that time German troops were still in Alsace and Lorraine and the French were having none of it. It was after all France's claim to these two disputed provinces which brought these two nations to war in the first place. So the war went on. Millions more young men from the four corners of the world laid down their lives in the name of French pride.
