IT seems strange to imagine with the current fashion for suntans, real or fake, that at one time pale skin was considered essential for a lady.

Before holidays abroad were commonplace, suntanned skin was a product of working outside. Ladies wanted to keep their skin as pale as possible to show that they did not have to work.
