LIKE many drivers faced with higher bills, I've spent much of 2009 trying to save money on motoring, instead of getting on with the good things in life, writes Jeremy Walton. My time hasn't been totally wasted, because one economy motoring move materialised.

Miles per gallon or mpg is a false god in costing a new or used car. If mpg is not the be all and end all of truly lower costs, what matters most? Think of those fantasy TV property programmes - except that your mantra should be: depreciation, depreciation and depreciation.
