DOWNING Street has insisted spending cuts were needed as Britain was "borrowing to keep the lights on" today after poor economic figures fuelled concerns over growth prospects. A spokesman for the Prime Minister admitted the Government must "do more" to boost trade after it emerged that the gap between imports and exports widened to a record Pounds 9.2 billion in December.

But they said the Trade and Investment White Paper being unveiled by Business Secretary Vince Cable would provide a "map" for improving the situation.
