I Want Transparent Debate On Housing ; Letters

Summary

I FIRST contacted Exeter University's vice-chancellor's office on January 28 courteously requesting figures that would show the predicted rate of the increase in the numbers of students requiring accommodation in Exeter, the numbers of beds that the university expects to supply on campus in response to the increase and any document in the public domain that would explain the university's expansion strategy to residents like myself, concerned by the impact of expansion on planning in the city. Given what has been estimated to be the equivalent of 45 medium- sized hotels needed in the city if expanded student numbers are to be accommodated in the purpose-built blocks, presented as a solution to high densities of students renting houses, and figures that last summer showed 4,046 people in Exeter on the housing list looking for one-bed accommodation, it seems to me that there is a clear public interest in the expansion figures.
