HE may have had to cancel an appearance in Exeter to open a newrestaurant bearing his name, but the man known as the godfather of Italian gastronomy is hoping to visit the city soon.

After more than 50 years in the business, Antonio Carluccio, renowned for his gentle manner, gruff voice and wild crop of white hair, was taken ill on the day of the official opening of the new Italian restaurant that has been welcoming diners in Princesshay for the past month.
