Summary
EARLIER this month, 1,000 young people from across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales gathered in Birmingham for a rally against cuts to youth services nationally. I was one of more than 100 young people who travelled from Devon to attend the rally. The day was full of exciting people to listen and talk to; we heard from young people who were directly affected by the cuts by losing the services they rely on, politicians who were either defending or condemning the cuts the services are facing, and from Unite representatives who are fighting hard to protect services for young people. So what can young people do about this? Many have already taken to the streets in peaceful protest. During the rally, the point was made about how the protests had already turned out in places like London and how they were policed.
The view was expressed that the police may have been heavy- handed in their approach, and I would like to see them take a more laid-back attitude to handle the situation in the future. Everyone attending also agreed that it is young people who seem to be paying for the cuts.See the full content of this document
