FIRE services are having to "make do and mend" as they hang in a spending limbo, unable to justify significant spending while they await the repeatedly delayed switchover to a controversial regional fire control centre.

Bernard Hughes, chairman of the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Authority, said he was unable to pay for significant upgrades because the service eventually expected to cross over to the regional hub at Taunton, which is costing Pounds 5,000 per day to run, despite standing practically empty.
