I FEAR Fire Minister Shahid Malik has no grasp of reality if he thinks that taxpayers, either local or national, do not provide funding for the construction and maintenance of the South West Regional Fire Control Centre, Taxpayers won't foot fire control centre bill, Letters, October 14.
Perhaps he could explain where the money comes from. Could it be the same source that funds MPs' expenses claims? Mr Malik says that these centres are essential to deal with major national and regional emergencies. That may be so, but I would suggest that they will be less effective when it comes to dealing with the majority of emergencies which will be local.See the full content of this document
