Cosmos make terrific fillers in borders and great cut flowers. They come in many colours, from white to pink and red, and can grow to around 6ft (1.8m) so many types need staking. There's also, of course, the now-famous Cosmos atrosanguineus, a chocolate-scented, bronze-flowered tender perennial, which is often grown in borders alongside deep red dahlias and sizzling orange crocosmias.
