THE drive for more fuel-efficient motoring which is also less polluting is throwing up a number of interesting solutions, writes Tony Lewis. Small, typically 1.0-litre three-cylinder engines will start to become commonplace; manufacturers are also keen to downsize: instead of a 2.0-litre engine, a 1.4 which is turbocharged will offer similar performance but far better fuel economy. It's all part of a drive to get cars under the magic 100g/km CO2 level because it gives car makers a headline emissions figure that they can shout about.

Renault's first sub-100g/km model has been achieved by a slightly different route.
