"For many Devon children their first experience of museums involves trying on Roman armour at Exeter," said Connel. "As a history co-ordinator in a local primary school, I know that this is an experience that will live with them for many years. The Roman collection is my favourite for inspiring children's interest in the past. What makes the experience at Exeter so special is that around them are some of the finest Roman objects in the South West.
"The roof tiles, window glass and mosaic pieces from the bathhouse are among the best. Set up by the Roman army, the house included a suite of hot and cold baths, changing rooms and an open- air swimming pool.
