Awards Highlight Young People's Unsung Contribution to Community

Summary

THE Echo's Teen Team awards are part of this newspaper's drive to show that teenagers are some of the leading members of our community. There are ten separate categories, with an awards night at Sandy Park this autumn. The Echo has been supporting youngsters across the city with our regular Teen Team stories, features, views and comments. The response has been significant, and raised the profile of young people in the city -- a positive move backed by some of our top business and education leaders. Exeter jeweller Ivor Doble, who is sponsoring the Positive Person Award, said: "This is a great competition because we're really lucky in Exeter to have some wonderful youngsters who do so much for so little recognition.

It's time that changed." Garry Mackay, a partner at solicitors Ashfords LLP in Exeter, which is sponsoring the Sports Award, said: "We understand the important role sport has to play in strengthening community links, raising awareness of vital issues and uniting people of all ages." Richard Atkins, principal of Exeter College, said: "We're delighted to be involved in the very first Teen Team awards, including sponsoring the education award."
