City Law Firm's Welcome for New Trainees

ASHFORDS has taken on 14 new trainee solicitors, bringing the total number of first and second-year trainees at the firm to a record high of 29. Three of the new trainees, Fiona Butler, Jo Spalding and Abigail Vickery, previously worked at the firm in support and paralegal roles before starting their training contracts. The trainees work in the firm's five regional offices, with six starting in Exeter, one in Bristol, two in Plymouth, three in Taunton and two in Tiverton.

Insurance Company Says Deals Will Bring 300 Jobs ; Business with Www.Southwestbusiness.Co.Uk South West Business

ALMOST 300 new jobs are to be created in the South West after Fortis (Insurance UK) confirmed details of deals with Tesco and car maker Toyota. The insurance company said the deals would create 300 jobs in Gloucester over the next year.

THE building that used to house Woolworths in Weston-super-Mare is set to reopen next month. The high street chain closed its doors last December after it went into administration and all the stock was sold off at bargain prices.

WORK has begun on a purpose-built facility for Lufthansa Resource at Cotswold Airport in Gloucestershire. The firm, which provides ground-based aviation engineering training, is relocating its existing South Wales base.

Team Marks 10 Years of Support for Crash Drivers

THOUSANDS of drivers have been helped to get back behind the wheel following serious accidents by a Devon company which is celebrating 10 years in business. Rosemary Pell founded the Road User Support Service (RUSS) after she was involved in two head-on car crashes. In both incidents she was hit by drivers travelling around blind bends on the wrong side of the road. The second accident left her with a permanent neck injury and a fear of driving.

New Look at Racecourse

EXETER Racecourse and Conference Centre is aiming to attract more events following completion of a Pounds 2.2m extension. The building will be fully operational for the course's flagship William Hill Gold Cup race day on Tuesday, November 3. Managing director Steven Clarke said: "We are delighted with the way the new extension has gone and, more importantly, that it was completed on schedule.

Pub Team Is Named in Top Restaurants

INVESTMENT in a new kitchen is paying off for a pub near Exeter, after it was named as one of the UK's top 100 restaurants. The Jack in the Green, at Rockbeare, was ranked in 80th place by the National Restaurant Awards Academy, made up of prominent chefs, restaurateurs and food critics.

Serene Lady Is Revered by Buddhists ; Royal Albert Memorial Museum Archive

THIS bronze statue of a serene lady shows the popular Chinese figure Guan Yin. Even today, Guan Yin is revered by Buddhists in China as an enlightened being 'The One who Hears the Cries of the World'. This particular figure was given to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in the last century, and depicts her on a throne dressed in flowing robes, complete with necklaces, bangles and an elaborate crown.
